Before the placement of dental implants, it must be determined that you have enough bone structure to support the fixture. If you do, a titanium post resembling a screw will be inserted into the location of the missing tooth to simulate the root of a tooth. Titanium is highly biocompatible, and the bone will bond with it over the next few months through a process called osseointegration. Once the implant is securely anchored, an abutment can be attached and a custom-built crown fitted to it. In some cases, a series of implants can be used to anchor a fixed bridge or denture, restoring many teeth at the same time.

Implants do not require the destruction of healthy tooth material, in the way that a bridge does. Because they are permanent, they are easier to care for than dentures, which may warp and need adjustment over time. Surrounding teeth will stay in place, without shifting into the gap left by the absence of the missing root, preventing future complications.
